DURABLE SHARPNESS
X30Cr13 is the secret of the high-quality stainless steel and delivers durable sharpness thanks to its individual qualities. The forged knives in the ActiveCut series are honed twice during the final sharpening process – this gives them their special sharpness.

PERFECT FOR THE PROFESSIONAL KITCHEN
The knife fits comfortably in your hand. The handle is made of a non-slip and abrasion-resistant material, preparing you for all challenges in the kitchen. Now, wet hands and hygiene are no longer a problem. The handle and the blade are joined without gaps and therefore absolutely hygienic. In addition, the ActiveCut knives are perfectly balanced, which means that this knife's centre of gravity is exactly in the middle of the knife, between the blade and the handle. This supports you in your daily tasks and saves your strength.

MADE IN GERMANY
The ActiveCut series is made in Germany. A good knife requires many work steps. Our ActiveCut knives go through numerous production steps at our Deizisau site before they are finished. Starting with the machining of the steel and right through to the finishing of the cutting edge.

KNIFE CARE
All F. DICK knives deserve special care and attention when it comes to maintenance. Proper knife care is crucial. Knives that are forged or have a wooden handle should never be cleaned in the dishwasher. Knives with plastic handles are completely dishwasher safe; however cleaning in a dishwasher is much more aggressive than washing by hand.

The use of highly concentrated detergents, leaving the knives in hot steam for a long time and also the presence of certain food residues can lead to pitting on the blades or even corrosion. We recommend clean the knife by hand with a soft cloth and a mild alkaline detergent. Wipe your knife after cleaning to ensure that tit is thoroughly dry – this will prevent any pitting on the blade. You can occasionally maintain knives with wooden handles with food-safe oils (e.g. olive oil). The oil makes the handle nice and smooth and prevents shrinkage and cracks.

PROFESSIONAL KNIFE STORAGE
For your safety and to protect the cutting edges of the blades, we recommend that you store the knives in a suitable knife block or on a magnetic rail. When buying a knife block, make sure you buy one with enough space and horizontal slots to protect the knife blades. We recommend our own blade guard for storage in a drawer - Edge Guard. or alternatively, dimensionally accurate compartments built into the drawer.

BLADE GUARD FOR KNIVES
Blade guard – Edge Guard, the special blade guard for storage, especially in drawers. Click here to see the blade guard for blades up to 26 cm.

KNIFE BLOCK FOR KNIVES
Knife block: Knife block with tourne knife, paring knife, boning knife, carving knife, bread knife, chef's knife, meat fork, sharpening steel and kitchen shears.

HOW DO KNIVES STAY SHARP FOR A LONG TIME?
Knives stay sharp for a long time if they are only used for their intended purpose. The knives should only be used for cutting and not chopping. Bones or the like should therefore only be cut with a cleaver.

WOODEN OR PLASTIC CUTTING BASES
Hard surfaces such as stone (e.g. marble) or glass should not be used as a base, as they quickly blunt the knives.

FAQ

FAQ

People Also Ask:

Q: What is the F. Dick ActiveCut Bread Knife Serrated Black 8.5" best for?

A: The F. Dick ActiveCut Bread Knife Serrated Black 8.5" is designed for slicing bread, crusted loaves, pastries, sandwiches, and soft produce with controlled, clean cuts. Its serrated edge helps the blade grip and cut through hard crusts without crushing softer interiors. This makes it especially useful in bakeries, cafés, prep kitchens, and home kitchens where consistent slicing matters. The 8.5" blade length provides enough reach for larger loaves while remaining manageable for everyday prep tasks. Within the F. Dick ActiveCut series, this knife is positioned as a practical professional tool focused on balance, handling comfort, and reliable daily performance. It suits users who need dependable cutting efficiency without moving into heavier or more specialized bread knife formats.

Q: Who should use the F. Dick ActiveCut Bread Knife Serrated Black 8.5"?

A: This bread knife is well suited for professional chefs, bakery staff, culinary students, caterers, and serious home cooks who regularly work with bread and baked products. For professional environments, the knife supports repetitive slicing with reduced tearing and better portion consistency. In cafés, bakeries, and hotel breakfast programs, a serrated bread knife is often one of the most frequently used prep tools. The ActiveCut series supports that workflow with an ergonomic, professional-oriented design. Home users who want a professional-grade bread knife without moving into highly decorative or collector-focused knife lines may also find the ActiveCut series appealing. The knife prioritizes utility, handling, and straightforward maintenance.

Q: What makes a serrated bread knife different from a standard chef knife?

A: A serrated bread knife uses a toothed cutting edge designed to grip and cut through crusts and delicate surfaces more effectively than a straight-edge chef knife. Unlike a chef knife, which relies on smooth slicing pressure, serrations create multiple contact points that reduce slipping and crushing. This is particularly important when cutting artisan bread, baguettes, brioche, croissants, or tomatoes. A chef knife can compress softer foods during slicing, while a serrated blade helps preserve structure and presentation. For professional kitchens, this separation of knife functions improves both cutting precision and edge longevity across the broader knife kit.

Q: Can the F. Dick ActiveCut Bread Knife Serrated Black 8.5" handle artisan bread and crusty loaves?

A: Yes. The serrated blade design is specifically intended to handle crusty bread while maintaining cleaner cuts through softer interiors. Hard crusts can quickly challenge straight-edge knives, especially during repetitive slicing. The serrations on the ActiveCut Bread Knife help initiate the cut with less downward force, reducing tearing and compression. This supports more uniform slices and improved presentation for sandwiches, plated service, or retail bakery display. The 8.5" blade length also provides practical control for medium and large loaves commonly used in cafés, bakeries, and hospitality operations.

Q: Is the F. Dick ActiveCut Bread Knife Serrated Black 8.5" suitable for beginners or professionals?

A: The knife is suitable for both newer users and experienced culinary professionals. For beginners, the serrated profile is generally forgiving and easier to control when cutting bread and soft produce. The ergonomic handle and balanced construction help improve comfort and confidence during prep. Culinary students and newer cooks often benefit from having a dedicated bread knife rather than using a chef knife for every task. For professionals, the knife supports consistent high-volume slicing workflows and reliable day-to-day durability. The ActiveCut series sits within the professional utility category of the F. Dick lineup, making it appropriate for commercial kitchen environments.

Q: Can this knife be used for foods other than bread?

A: Yes. The knife can also be used for pastries, cakes, sandwiches, tomatoes, melons, and other foods with delicate interiors or firm outer surfaces. Many professional kitchens use serrated bread knives beyond bakery prep because the tooth pattern helps reduce crushing. This is particularly useful when portioning layered sandwiches, slicing soft fruits, or cutting baked goods with textured crusts or toppings. While it is versatile within that category, it is still best used as a dedicated serrated slicing knife rather than a replacement for chef or carving knives.

Q: How durable is the F. Dick ActiveCut Bread Knife Serrated Black 8.5"?

A: The knife is built for repeated daily kitchen use with a focus on practical durability and consistent handling. F. Dick is known for producing professional culinary tools intended for demanding prep environments. The ActiveCut series emphasizes balance, grip comfort, and long-term usability rather than decorative presentation. In commercial kitchens, serrated bread knives are often exposed to constant repetitive use, so durability and edge stability are especially important. Proper care, correct cutting surfaces, and regular cleaning will help maintain the knife’s performance over time.

Q: What results should users expect from the F. Dick ActiveCut Bread Knife Serrated Black 8.5"?

A: Users should expect cleaner slices, reduced tearing, and more controlled cutting performance when working with bread and delicate baked products. The serrated edge allows the knife to grip the surface of the product before slicing through it. This helps preserve texture and presentation, especially for artisan loaves, pastries, and sandwiches. In commercial settings, more consistent slicing can also improve portion control and reduce product waste. For home cooks, the knife offers a more reliable and less frustrating bread-cutting experience compared with using standard straight-edge kitchen knives.

Q: Does the serrated edge stay effective longer than a straight-edge knife?

A: In many bread-slicing applications, serrated edges can maintain effective cutting performance longer than straight-edge blades. Because the recessed portions of the serrations experience less direct surface contact, the cutting edge may show slower apparent wear during normal bread slicing. This makes serrated bread knives especially practical in high-volume bakery and café environments. However, serrated knives still require proper maintenance and occasional professional sharpening to maintain optimal performance.

Q: Is the F. Dick ActiveCut Bread Knife Serrated Black 8.5" comfortable for long prep sessions?

A: Yes. The ActiveCut series is designed with professional handling comfort and balanced daily use in mind. Bread slicing can become repetitive during prep-intensive shifts, especially in bakeries, catering operations, and breakfast service environments. A well-balanced knife with a secure ergonomic handle helps reduce hand fatigue and improves cutting control over time. The ActiveCut line is positioned as a modern professional utility series within the broader F. Dick knife family, supporting practical kitchen workflows rather than decorative presentation.

Q: Is the F. Dick ActiveCut Bread Knife Serrated Black 8.5" easy to maintain?

A: Yes. Routine maintenance is straightforward when the knife is cleaned, dried, and stored properly after use. Bread knives generally require less frequent sharpening than straight-edge prep knives because of their serrated profile. Regular hand washing and avoiding hard cutting surfaces will help preserve edge performance and overall longevity. For commercial kitchens, maintaining dedicated knife storage and proper handling procedures also supports food safety and extends tool life.

Q: Is this bread knife suitable for commercial kitchen environments?

A: Yes. The knife is designed for professional culinary use and supports repeated daily prep tasks in commercial environments. Bread slicing is a constant workflow in many operations, including bakeries, cafés, hotels, catering kitchens, and sandwich programs. The ActiveCut Bread Knife is built to support those environments with a balance of cutting efficiency, handling comfort, and practical durability. Its professional-oriented design aligns with F. Dick’s broader reputation for culinary and butcher tools used in working kitchens worldwide.

Q: What is included with the F. Dick ActiveCut Bread Knife Serrated Black 8.5"?

A: The product includes the F. Dick ActiveCut Bread Knife with a serrated 8.5" blade and black ergonomic handle. The knife is intended as a standalone cutting tool within the broader ActiveCut knife series. Depending on the kitchen setup, users may pair it with chef knives, utility knives, sharpening tools, knife rolls, or storage systems from the wider F. Dick lineup. This allows kitchens to build a coordinated prep tool system based on their workflow requirements.

Q: Where does the ActiveCut series fit within the F. Dick knife lineup?

A: The ActiveCut series sits within the professional utility segment of the F. Dick knife family. Compared with entry-level utility-focused lines, ActiveCut offers a more refined professional feel while remaining highly practical for daily kitchen work. Compared with premium heritage or design-oriented collections like 1905 or 1778, the emphasis is more functional and workflow-driven. This positioning makes the series attractive for professionals, culinary students, and serious home users seeking dependable performance without moving into collector-focused price categories.

Q: How does the F. Dick ActiveCut Bread Knife compare to a straight-edge slicing knife?

A: The ActiveCut Bread Knife is better suited for crusted bread and delicate baked goods, while straight-edge slicing knives are typically preferred for smooth carving and protein slicing. Serrated edges excel when the exterior surface is harder or more textured than the interior. This helps reduce slipping and compression during bread slicing. Straight-edge slicing knives, by contrast, are optimized for cleaner push or pull cuts through meats and proteins. In most professional kitchens, both knife types serve complementary roles rather than replacing one another.

Q: How does the ActiveCut series compare to the F. Dick Red Spirit series?

A: The ActiveCut series focuses on practical professional utility, while Red Spirit places additional emphasis on distinctive styling and a more specialized ergonomic identity. Both series are designed for professional kitchen use, but ActiveCut generally appeals to users prioritizing straightforward performance and daily workflow efficiency. Red Spirit often attracts chefs looking for a more visually distinctive handle design and a stronger personality within the knife kit. The best choice depends on handling preference, kitchen environment, and the user’s desired balance between aesthetics and utility.

Q: Is the F. Dick ActiveCut Bread Knife reliable during high-volume service?

A: Yes. The knife is designed to support repetitive bread and pastry slicing in busy prep and service environments. Bakery teams often require consistent cuts across multiple product types throughout the day. The serrated edge helps maintain cleaner slicing performance with less compression, while the ergonomic handle supports repetitive movement during production shifts. For cafés, bakeries, and hotel breakfast operations, a dependable bread knife contributes directly to presentation consistency and workflow efficiency.

Q: Is the F. Dick ActiveCut Bread Knife a good professional starter bread knife?

A: Yes. The knife provides a practical introduction to professional bread knife handling and dedicated knife-task workflow. Culinary students benefit from learning when to use a serrated knife instead of relying on a chef knife for every cutting task. The ActiveCut series offers a professional-oriented design without requiring the investment level associated with premium heritage collections. Its balance of utility, comfort, and straightforward maintenance makes it appropriate for culinary school kits and early-career kitchen use.

Q: Why choose a professional bread knife instead of a general kitchen knife?

A: A dedicated professional bread knife improves slicing control, protects delicate textures, and handles crusted bread more effectively than general-purpose kitchen knives. Many home users struggle with crushed bread, uneven slices, or slipping blades when using standard chef knives. A serrated bread knife addresses those problems directly through its cutting geometry and longer slicing profile. For users who regularly buy artisan bread or prepare sandwiches and baked goods at home, the difference is immediately noticeable during everyday use.

Q: Can the F. Dick ActiveCut Bread Knife support fast-paced prep workflows?

A: Yes. The knife is well suited for catering environments where speed, consistency, and repetitive slicing are part of daily production. Catering teams often prep large quantities of sandwich bread, rolls, pastries, and plated accompaniments within tight timelines. The serrated edge improves cutting efficiency while helping maintain cleaner presentation across high-volume batches. The knife’s professional-oriented construction also supports portability and repeated setup across changing prep environments.
