TRADITION AND QUALITY MEET DESIGN
The year 1905 was one of radical change and technical progress. It was precisely during these exciting times that the Swabian knife manufacturer Friedr. Dick scrutinised the knife designs that had been common up to that time. Knife handles had always been attached to the forged blade with 3 rivets. This meant that the knives of many knife manufacturers were identical down to the last detail. Friedr. Dick developed a unique series of knives that clearly stood out from all previous designs.

INNOVATIVE DESIGN
Friedr. Dick already had an eye for beautiful design in 1905 when it developed a knife series with solid collars. These replaced the round rivets that had been known and in use until then. Unfortunately, this early 20th century design has fallen into oblivion, but it experienced a revival in 2010. All knives in the 1905 series have a distinctive handle. Steel rings alternate with the high-quality and resistant plastic without gaps, making the handle a haptic as well as a visual experience. The F. DICK embossing on the knife blade completes the classically modern design of the series.

SHARP BLADE
Yet the knives in the 1905 series can do more than just look beautiful. They also have very sharp quality features: The high-end chrome steel XCrMoV15 keeps your blade sharp for a long time. This edge retention supports you in your daily use. The blade is honed twice and is therefore particularly sharp.

SAFETY
Safety is also taken care of. A half bolster finger guard protects your fingers, but you can also easily resharpen the cutting edge completely. In the 1905 series, many classic but also special knife shapes are available, leaving nothing to be desired.

KNIFE CARE
All F. DICK knives deserve special care and attention when it comes to maintenance. Proper knife care is crucial. Knives that are forged or have a wooden handle should never be cleaned in the dishwasher. Knives with plastic handles are completely dishwasher safe; however cleaning in a dishwasher is much more aggressive than washing by hand.

The use of highly concentrated detergents, leaving the knives in hot steam for a long time and also the presence of certain food residues can lead to pitting on the blades or even corrosion. We recommend clean the knife by hand with a soft cloth and a mild alkaline detergent. Wipe your knife after cleaning to ensure that tit is thoroughly dry – this will prevent any pitting on the blade. You can occasionally maintain knives with wooden handles with food-safe oils (e.g. olive oil). The oil makes the handle nice and smooth and prevents shrinkage and cracks.

PROFESSIONAL KNIFE STORAGE
For your safety and to protect the cutting edges of the blades, we recommend that you store the knives in a suitable knife block or on a magnetic rail. When buying a knife block, make sure you buy one with enough space and horizontal slots to protect the knife blades. We recommend our own blade guard for storage in a drawer - Edge Guard. or alternatively, dimensionally accurate compartments built into the drawer.

HOW DO KNIVES STAY SHARP FOR A LONG TIME?
Knives stay sharp for a long time if they are only used for their intended purpose. The knives should only be used for cutting and not chopping.
Bones or the like should therefore only be cut with a cleaver.

WOODEN OR PLASTIC CUTTING BASES
Hard surfaces such as stone (e.g. marble) or glass should not be used as a base, as they quickly blunt the knives.

FAQ

FAQ

People Also Ask:

Q: What is the Friedr. Dick 1905 Series serrated utility knife best for?

A: The Friedr. Dick 1905 Series serrated utility knife is best for slicing foods with firm exteriors and soft interiors, such as tomatoes, citrus, bread rolls, and sandwiches. The serrated edge grips and cuts through delicate or slippery surfaces without crushing the interior, which is critical in both professional prep and service environments. This makes it especially effective for tasks where a straight-edge knife might slip or compress the product. Within the 1905 series, the blade geometry is paired with a balanced forged construction, supporting controlled, repeatable cuts during high-volume prep or à la minute service.

Q: Who should use the Friedr. Dick 1905 Series serrated utility knife?

A: This knife is suited for chefs, culinary students, and serious home cooks who need precision slicing for delicate or crusted items. In professional kitchens, it fills a specific role between a paring knife and a bread knife, often used for finishing tasks, sandwich assembly, and garnish prep. For culinary students, it provides a reliable tool for learning controlled slicing without excessive pressure. Serious home cooks benefit from its versatility, especially when preparing produce or bakery items where clean presentation matters.

Q: Can the Friedr. Dick 1905 Series serrated utility knife handle tomatoes and soft fruits?

A: Yes, it is specifically designed to handle tomatoes and soft fruits without crushing them. The serrated edge penetrates the skin cleanly, reducing the need for downward force. This preserves the structure and moisture of the product, which is important for plating and consistency. In both prep kitchens and front-of-house applications, this results in cleaner slices and less product waste.

Q: Is the Friedr. Dick 1905 Series serrated utility knife suitable for professional kitchens?

A: Yes, it is designed for consistent performance in professional kitchen environments. The 1905 series is built around forged construction and balanced handling, which supports repeated use across service periods. The serrated edge also reduces the need for frequent sharpening compared to straight blades, which can be advantageous in busy kitchens. This makes it a practical secondary knife on the line, especially for sandwich stations, garde manger, and prep areas.

Q: Is the Friedr. Dick 1905 Series serrated utility knife beginner-friendly?

A: Yes, it is approachable for beginners while still meeting professional standards. The serrated edge naturally assists with grip during cutting, reducing the skill required to initiate clean slices. This helps new users maintain control, especially when working with slippery or delicate foods. At the same time, the knife retains the balance and build quality expected from a professional series, allowing it to remain relevant as skills develop.

Q: How does the serrated edge perform compared to a straight-edge utility knife?

A: A serrated edge performs better on crusted or soft-skinned foods where a straight edge may slip or compress. The teeth create multiple contact points, allowing the blade to grip the surface and cut efficiently with a sawing motion. This is particularly useful for bread, tomatoes, and citrus. In contrast, straight-edge knives are better suited for push cuts on firm products, making both styles complementary in a professional toolkit.

Q: What kind of cutting results should users expect from this knife?

A: Users can expect clean, controlled slices with minimal tearing or crushing. The serration pattern supports precise cuts through delicate textures, preserving structure and presentation. This is important in applications such as sandwich preparation, plating, and garnish work. The forged blade and balanced handle further contribute to consistent results over repeated use.

Q: How durable is the Friedr. Dick 1905 Series serrated utility knife?

A: It is built for long-term durability under regular professional use. The 1905 series uses high-quality steel and forged construction, which supports edge retention and structural integrity. Serrated edges also tend to maintain functional sharpness longer because only the points of the teeth contact cutting surfaces. This combination reduces maintenance frequency while maintaining reliable performance.

Q: Is the Friedr. Dick 1905 Series serrated utility knife easy to maintain?

A: Yes, it requires less frequent sharpening than a straight-edge knife. Because the serrations do most of the cutting work, the edge retains effectiveness over time. However, when sharpening is required, it typically needs specialized tools or professional service due to the serrated profile. Routine cleaning and proper storage remain essential to preserve performance and longevity.

Q: How does the handle design of the 1905 Series affect usability?

A: The handle is designed to provide secure grip and balanced control during cutting. The 1905 series is known for its distinctive steel ring construction, which integrates durability with hygiene and stability. This design helps maintain grip even during extended prep sessions. For professional users, this translates into reduced fatigue and consistent handling across tasks.

Q: Does the Friedr. Dick 1905 Series serrated utility knife fit into a professional knife kit?

A: Yes, it serves as a complementary tool within a complete knife kit. It fills a specific role that chef’s knives and paring knives do not fully cover, particularly for crusted or delicate items. This makes it a standard addition for many professional setups. In structured workflows, it is often used at sandwich stations, prep counters, or for finishing tasks.

Q: What types of foods is this knife not ideal for?

A: It is not ideal for tasks requiring clean push cuts on firm or dense ingredients. Serrated edges can create uneven surfaces when used on proteins or dense vegetables where a straight edge would produce cleaner cuts. For those tasks, a chef’s knife or slicing knife is typically more appropriate.

Q: How does the Friedr. Dick 1905 Series differ from other knife series?

A: The 1905 series combines historical design with modern forged performance and distinctive handle construction. Its steel ring handle design sets it apart visually and functionally, offering durability and grip stability. Compared to more entry-level lines, it emphasizes balance, finish, and long-term performance. This positions it as a premium choice within the Friedr. Dick range.

Q: What makes this knife different from a bread knife?

A: It is smaller and more precise than a bread knife, while still offering serrated cutting performance. Bread knives are designed for larger loaves and longer cuts, whereas a serrated utility knife provides better control for smaller items like rolls, fruits, and sandwiches. This makes it more versatile for everyday prep tasks.

Q: How does the Friedr. Dick 1905 Series serrated utility knife compare to similar knives from brands like Zwilling or Victorinox?

A: It offers a more distinctive handle design and forged construction compared to many stamped alternatives. While competitors such as Zwilling and Victorinox offer strong utility knives, the 1905 series emphasizes balance, heritage design, and premium finishing. This makes it particularly appealing to users who prioritize both performance and build quality in a professional setting.

Q: Is the Friedr. Dick 1905 Series serrated utility knife reliable during high-volume service?

A: Yes, it provides consistent slicing performance during repeated service tasks. The serrated edge reduces the need for constant maintenance, while the balanced construction supports control under pressure. This is valuable in sandwich stations and garde manger roles where speed and consistency matter. It functions as a dependable secondary knife during service.

Q: Is the Friedr. Dick 1905 Series serrated utility knife easy to learn with?

A: Yes, it helps students achieve clean cuts with less technique refinement. The serrated edge grips the product surface, reducing slipping and improving control. This builds confidence while learning proper knife handling. It is a practical addition to a student kit alongside a chef’s knife and paring knife.

Q: Is this knife worth adding to a home kitchen setup?

A: Yes, it adds versatility for everyday slicing tasks that standard knives may not handle as cleanly. It is particularly useful for bread rolls, tomatoes, and citrus, where clean cuts improve presentation and ease of preparation. For home users building a high-quality toolkit, it fills a clear functional gap.

Q: Can this knife be used in protein prep workflows?

A: It can be used for select tasks but is not intended as a primary protein knife. The serrated edge is better suited for crusts and skins rather than clean protein slicing. For butchery or portioning, straight-edge knives remain the preferred choice. However, it can assist in tasks such as slicing cooked items or prepared sandwiches.

Q: Does the Friedr. Dick 1905 Series serrated utility knife align with professional procurement standards?

A: Yes, it aligns with professional expectations for durability, consistency, and brand reliability. Friedr. Dick is widely recognized in professional kitchens, and the 1905 series represents one of its premium offerings. This supports confidence in both performance and long-term value. For dealers, it fits well within a curated professional knife assortment.
